About the workshop
A Mayan house renovation workshop will be organized in August 2024, as part of the research project entitled “Enhancing rural networks as a revitalization strategy in Bécal, Campeche”, led by Joseline Sierra, student at ENSA Versailles and TONGI in Shanghai . This study focuses on Mayan architecture and its potential in the face of rural decline and urban expansion. The workshop will take place in the indigenous town of Bécal, near Mérida, the capital of Yucatán, Mexico.

The workshop will take place in two sessions: from August 1 to 8 and from August 9 to 16, 2024. The structure of the workshop will include a series of talks given by prominent national and international personalities:

Dr. Cristiana Mazzoni: Expert in Southern Vernacular Architecture.

Prof. Mariana Nagore: Specialist in Built Heritage.

Dr. Cessia Chuc Ponte Xuux: Anthropologist specialized in Mayan culture.

The prospective exploration of the territory, supported by cartographic material developed during the thesis, will be the main method during this in situ immersion. Subsequently, the guano technique and Mayan construction will be delved into, under the direction of Mayan architecture expert Mario Herrera. The goal of the workshop is to develop construction skills and, over the course of a week, renovate a Mayan house.
